Andy Murray and Wife Receive Approval for Renovation Plans at Cromlix Estate
Andy Murray and his wife Kim have received approval to renovate a former stables building located on the grounds of their C-Listed Cromlix Estate near Stirling, Scotland. The couple submitted plans to transform the old stables, previously used as a workers’ cottage, with updates including a new slate roof and roof lights.
Renovation Details and Concerns Raised
According to documents filed with Stirling Council, the couple’s plans focus on addressing structural issues with the building. The proposed renovation involves removing the existing slates from the roof, inspecting and repairing the sarking boards, and replacing any damaged timber. Additionally, the rainwater goods, which have shown signs of corrosion and caused water ingress, will be replaced with black cast iron fixtures to match the original structure.
However, the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) raised concerns about the potential presence of roosting bats, which are a protected species under UK law. Handling, disturbing, or harming bats without a licence is illegal, which could have affected the renovation process if bats were found on-site.
The SWT urged caution, stating: “Due to the structure of this building and its location for bat foraging, the applicants should be reminded of their legal duties regarding bats found on-site.”
No Bats Found, Renovation Gets Green Light
After thorough assessments, Stirling Council officials confirmed that no bats were discovered within the stables or surrounding areas. Consequently, the council approved the renovation plans, noting that “bats cannot be considered through the Listed Building Consent process.” Nevertheless, the applicants have been informed of their responsibilities regarding wildlife protection.
A council report added: “This particular building, which was used as stables in the past, is currently in a visible state of disrepair. The roof has significant gaps and has suffered water damage from multiple sources, including corroded rainwater fixtures.”
The proposed renovations are considered essential for preserving the Listed Building and maintaining its historical character.
Cromlix Estate and Murray’s Connection
Murray purchased the 15-room Cromlix Estate for nearly £2 million in 2013, turning it into a luxury hotel that has since hosted several family milestones. The tennis star’s wedding reception took place there in 2015, and his brother Jamie Murray also held his wedding at the estate.
After a three-month refurbishment led by Kim Murray, Cromlix reopened last year. The venue continues to be a special place for the Murray family, both as a hotel and a location for personal celebrations.
Murray’s Retirement and Future Plans
Since playing his final match for Team GB at the Paris Olympics, Andy Murray has embraced retirement, focusing on his family and various projects, including overseeing the renovations at Cromlix.
